Viking leaders looked at the Stokcham maps and surroundings but mostly it was endless desert with few small oasis. And tundra. The leaders considered that tundra could provide some base for fair attack, but it was hard for maneuvers and needed more considerations for tacticians. But will the barbarians allow us the time for tactic studies?!

Our Eldest's Column
-------------------

The little folk liberation front loonies (LFLFL?) do have some valid points. I haven't done a great job of protecting the little folk from either monsters or other factions. On my watch, the little folk have grown more slowly than other factions, drifting down in the statistician's rankings. My first attempt to pillage was a disaster, embarassing our governors, and creating a shortfall in our treasury. (This was my fault, not the demon's fault. The advice was good, my execution was poor.) And the little folk haven't killed a single monster yet. We hit one once, but we didn't kill it before it killed all of us. Monsters are hard to kill.

Being led by their eldest is a problem for the little folk, because sometimes the little folk get stuck with a dud leader. A problem for dud leaders is that this job is a life sentence; there is no way to exit this job except to die in it. Were Aenbecan still alive, he would tell me that the little folk liberation front (LFLF) is offering to assist me in my passage to the next plane of existence. Because Aenbecan is wrong, I got that information instead from the secretary I sent to their meeting to sneak out some biscuits for me.

I wonder if aging magic exists? Can anagathics be made from herbs and mushrooms? If I could halt my own aging, then in time the high priestess would be older than me, and the little folk could complain at her instead of complaining at me.

Or, since much of the magic in this world is used to hurt, not to help, perhaps there is aging magic that speeds up aging? If there were, then I could prematurely age one of my ambitious lieutenants (since aging the high priestess might not end well) and pass of this thankless job to him or her.

Oh well, enough dreaming. Back to negotiating with the new rulers that have arrived. The little folk have always been slaves.

The little folk occupy a large area, and control none of it. Other factions waltz through conquering cities; we haven't managed to conquer a village yet. We haven't killed a single monster yet. We hit one once, but we didn't kill it. Monsters are hard to kill. Is there a tutorial? Maybe I should try asking another demon for advice.

Pillaging Column
----------------

The frightening masks do work. It is hard to have exactly the right number of dancers, though. Too many and one might as well just beg for alms, too few and the audience laughs at us.

Assistant Editor's Column
-------------------------

Our Eldest has it easy. All he and the governors have to do is write orders for our units. Which is pretty easy; "flee from here, run away from there, rebuild the destroyed mines in another place, see if the sphinx (sphinxes? sphinges? sphinxoi?) and the sandlings have moved away yet. Can dash that off in a hurry. Writing these articles, on the other hand, takes more time. Or it would take more time, if this article were any good. Sorry. Publication deadline is imminent, so this shall be another short issue. Something must be done. I am going to send a letter to the Times' editor asking that publish only 2/3 as frequently, so we will have more time to write. I think two or three months from now would be a good time for that extension. If anyone else agrees that a bit more time for writing articles would be good, please ask the Times' editor to slow down the rate at which she requests new articles.

Music Column
------------

Singing to monsters is scary, so we got a nice safe city job. Then the city was overrun. We sure hope the new overlords like our music. Is there any safe place for musicians? And do the new overlords want us to loudly sing their praises, or to pretend we didn't notice any change in local government?

LFLF Column
-----------

Our Eldest loves everybody. This is bad for the little folk. Our Eldest firmly believes Good Mr. Hagen is his good friend, despite circumstantial evidence around some suspicious little folk deaths that points, if not to Good Mr. Hagen, at least Thane's Ring spirits and other associates. Our Eldest thinks the ring of Thane's armies makes us safe inside. Our morgues are very full the last few months; can it really be worse than this outside Thane's Ring of safety? Join the little folk liberation front this month for an exciting discussion about how much longer Our Eldest is likely to live, how much longer he should live, and whether anything can be done to bring those two durations closer together. We will, as always, serve tea and the very best biscuits available anywhere at our meeting.

Peace Column
------------

Little folk are born free, and everywhere they are in chains. Most of our neighbors say they want peace, but everywhere the little fork travel, we see people diligently studying for war. Will this end well?

Obituary Column
---------------

Morbrec, Uib, Pidarnoin, Sharp Alpin, Broichan, Little Maithgemma, Younger Caelfind, Little Tea, Bryn of Antanoatos, Drest, Shy Alpinos, Little Aethelorythe, Lebarcham, and 14 other little folk were slain by 9 sandlings and a sphinx. They will be missed.
It is easy to complain about the other factions, but really, the monsters have killed more little folk than hostile factions ever have. Singing to monsters has not brought an end to death yet.

The Council of the Four Winds sent out a message for all areas to send troops towards the capital. The lack of monster attacks was a poor omen, and it meant every available defender should be rallied. It was now time to build a fortress.

"Goblins... What scum!" If the High Elf Lentael had been scum himself, he would have cleared his throat and spat out a ball of phlegm.

The village of Clan of the Dragon was slowly developing. Some farmers had driven all the pigs into some paddocks, the miners seemed to be minimally orderly than before, and there were even talks to open up the quarry again. Still, there was a long way to go for the Clan. A veeeeeeeeery long way, in Lentael's opinion. But there was nothing to be done about it. The world contained goblins. He probably had to find a way to live with that.

If they just didn't stink that much! Even the camels, with which Lintael had the bad luck having to work with, stank less. Sometimes he wondered if the little devils did that intentionally. The art of stink...

Lintael went back to work. Camels... He shuddered. But they had one thing he envied them for. Camels had managed the trick of closing off their own nostrils. He'd be king of this village if he could do that. Making life soooooo much easier.

But no. The stink it was for Lintael.
