Our Eldest's Column
-------------------

If every time I make a mistake, I hire a new category of civil servants, and assign them the task of preventing that particular mistake, will I eventually make no mistakes, or will the little folk collapse under the weight of supporting all these civil servants?

Way back when we were in the Nexus we were advised that a polite sharing with one's neighbors "can leave the sharing unit without enough funds to pay maintenance". We didn't see a problem with that; if our brothers are going hungry, we shall happily risk starvation together. But we failed to account for the case where one of our brothers tries to buy way too much, the rest of us all try to pay for his erroneous purchase, then we all starve together. Or the case where the income we thought we would receive does not all materialize. Wise was the sage who wrote "You may like to make sure that there is a unit with sufficient funds for maintenance in the same region, and which is not sharing, as those funds will be shared for maintenance, but not for less important purposes." We wish we had learned from his or her experience instead of having to learn this from our own.

We have heard other factions musing about what food is good for. Food (and even raw grain, fish, or livestock) is good for eating when one accidentally spends all one's silver.

I went hungry but the gods refused to release me from this thankless job, I'm still here, and so are the first three priestesses. I failed to study anything of course, which the little folk liberation front loonies will surely use to call once again for new government. And I failed to cast any magic because of a spelling error in the incantation. I'll say I was too hungry to remember the words.

Henceforth, a new class of civil servants will be tasked with not sharing except during famines. They shall run the public granaries, and be supported by a tax on grain stored. These officials will necessarily be carrying a large amount of silver (if they cannot get food instead), so it is possible that foreign assassins would like to be able to identify them. If your assassins speak standard goblin, the little folk are always willing to help, so we suggest you simply ask your potential victim if he or she is a granary official. If your assassins do not speak standard goblin, you may identify little folk granary officials by the lattice tattoo on their left arms. Alternatively, if you do not wish to risk assassination, our granary officials will usually be willing to donate 200 silver to thieves who ask politely.

Assistant Editor's Column
-------------------------

Where are all my columnists? It is time to ship our submissions off to the times, what do you mean your column is not done yet?

Religion Column
---------------

(Written by the High Priestess herself again this month.)

We hear rumors that cooking doesn't really work. That would be disappointing; if cooking doesn't work, what will we serve at the festival next August celebrating our salvation by mithril clad warriors at Stockdare? We are also having trouble organizing quarrying and statue production. Last month's local famine didn't help.

It is a time for all little folk to turn back to their gods, not to flee to the east and south. We still have rural lands here, if only we will stay around and develop than. Now where has my orcish confirmation class gotten to? Maybe in this time of trial, orcs can help us.

Governors' Column
-----------------

The little folk took a town in the west. Our Eldest probably won't even mention it because he didn't help at all, he is still studying in the east. Or pretending to study in the east, or whatever it is that he does. The town was promptly invaded by ogres. I guess now that the guardsmen are gone, we are expected to deal with those? But they look tougher than the guardsmen, and the guardsmen killed quite a few of us. The guardsmen left us some swords, but of course they left to those of us who already have swords, not those of us who are unarmed, and we won't have time to distribute them before dealing with the ogres. This might not end well. Would anything so bad happen if we just ignored the ogres for a month and passed out these spiffy new swords?

Peace Column
------------

The Thane silver clad ones replaced the city guard of Zelotatres this month. We heard a single rumor about a peacemaker, then nothing. Is there a peacemaker or not? Are the Thane silver clad ones who liberated Zelotatres the peacemaker? Does all this war now going on around us end in peace? Soon?

Eastern Column
--------------

What a wide variety of uses undead are put to in the east. In the west, (well, what the little folk call the west, anyway, the lands around the Lanktos Sea), undead serve but one purpose; they keep down the little folk population. But in the east, undead also offer yew and double bows to the living, and undead assist the living in their battles. Our flight from the west has brought us to a strange place indeed. Are we prepared for this? Our Eldest said he would study necromancy; has he in fact been studying?

LFLF Column

What do you mean it is time to submit our column already?
Um, uh, tea and biscuits this month, as usual?

Obituary Column
---------------

Droann of Lurgdor, the oldest little folk academic and our eldest's tutor in non-magical arts, starved to death in Warrington last month. An accounting error left everyone without food, and the most senior of the little folk shared equally with the youngest; all went hungry together.

Urist and Erin were slain by an ice dragon and 4 yeti last month. Urist and Erin must have become fearsome warriors indeed for the ice dragon to think the 4 yeti necessary.

The fragments of roads left behind by ancient civilisations was a mystery. Their routes weren't always obvious, and sometimes connected terrible settlements. Maybe political divisions had caused them to stop at borders long ago?

Some things never changed though. The ruined roads were the width of two horses, ready for wagons or chariots.

No wonder the heat in this world is so unbearable. There is a lot of energy wasted when you use ten flaming swords to kill a single scout. In Utuk'ku view, a single ice thrust to the heart is much more efficient.

Khron Stonehand nodded as the goblin work gang shifted the next block into place.

"Aye lads, easy does it, gently on the mortar now. That'll do."

The foregoblin raised it's head quizzically.

"Master masondwarf, will this actually stop a sphinx?"

The Stonehand grunted. "Well, it's like failed against two Kongs. But if there's only one sphinx? Maybe."
