Our Eldest's Column
-------------------

How exactly have I become the little folk's pack mule, carrying goods from place to place? Is this any job for a weak old man? And won't this just make me an inviting target for assassins? I think the demon told me that to avoid assassins I should send goods in goblin parties, because an assassin that can kill only one goblin can't take enough goods to make the goblin worth killing. Sigh. All this killing. Why aren't the productive, helpful skills more popular? Phantasmal Entertainment, now that was a skill that just made the world a better place with no harm to anyone. And Earth Lore, that's another helping skill. Healing seems good, though the way the gods designed healing seems to help attackers do harm with impunity rather than to help defenders suffer less when overrun. And the high priestess tells me these healing teas don't work as well as I think they do; she tells me Beastmasters was right about these teas and mushrooms being disappointing.

Old Guard Column
----------------

We are unsure how the Times decides when the fall of a city is newsworthy and when not. Of the 31 cities the little folk know of, only 17 have been reported in the Times to have fallen. But some cities have fallen without mention in the Times. Last month we estimated that fewer than 10 cities were still ruled by the old guards. The times reported that three more cities fell last month. (We heard a credible report that a fourth city fell with no mention in the Times, but our assistant editor required that we confirm this city's fall from a second source before he would publish this. We were unable to find a second source who would confirm it.) In any case, whether a fourth city fell silently or not last month, we now estimate that fewer than half a dozen cities still remain in the old guard's control. Soon this columnist will be looking for another job, as there will soon be no old guard news to report.

Grammar Column
--------------

Dear Miss Goblin Grammar;

In my Standard Goblin edition of February's Times, I read that Desert Eagles asks "What is going on in the center?". What is the native language of Desert Eagles, and what word in that language was translated to "center" in the Standard Goblin edition of the Times? -- Uncentered Cylinder

Dear Uncentered Cylinder;

Miss Goblin Grammar does not know the native language of Desert Eagles. But in all languages known to Miss Goblin Grammar, the center of a cylinder does not lie on the surface of the cylinder, so it is unclear what location Desert Eagles is asking about. Miss Goblin Grammar wonders whether the question is rhetorical. Desert Eagles is supposedly an expert witness, so it is possible that Desert Eagles already knows what is going on in the center, and is asking his question not hoping we will answer, but hoping we will ask ourselves the same question. Miss Goblin Grammar asked the little folk cartographers if they knew what location on the surface of this world might be considered the center. They replied that many societies draw their maps on flat paper instead of on the glass cylinders the little folk use. Our cartographers told Miss Goblin Grammar that in many of these societies, it is conventional to place the Rukail waterfall, where the Rukail flows north off the top of the world, at one corner of the map. Societies that live north of the equator usually place the Rukail waterfall at the upper left corner of their maps, while societies in the southern hemisphere sometimes place the Rukail waterfall in the lower right corner. According to the cartographers, the Rukail waterfall is usually chosen as the dividing line because, supposedly, the nexus is located high above this waterfall, somehow hidden in the clouds of mist from the falls. If Desert Eagles is from one of the societies that uses flat maps, then he might consider the point on the equator farthest from the waterfall to be the center of the map. According to our cartographers, this location is in the Amain river. There are little folk within a month's travel to the north, south, east, and west, of this region, but none in the waters Amain farthest from the shadow of the nexus. Perhaps if you have friends in this region you could write to them and ask them to investigate this section of river. It is possible that their investigation might help us solve this interesting translation problem. Or you could just ask Desert Eagles; supposedly the leader of Desert Eagles is a famous warlord, often mentioned in rumors.

Tea Column
----------

Having "acquired" (it wasn't stolen, honest, the shady fellow who sold it to us said it was his grandmother's recipe, and we didn't see Beastmasters' name anywhere on the copy we bought) Beastmasters' secret tea recipe, we are at a loss for how we will sell this to the warlords. Learning to make even the most basic of these teas takes as long as learning basic soldiery. And while basic soldiery let's one beg for alms, no one pays for basic teas. It appears that teas without mushrooms made by anyone other than centaurs or lizardmen usually don't work. Learning to make a tea that works even half the time requires as much study as learning to build a citadel. And while the mushroom teas are slightly better, only lizardmen can find or harvest these mushrooms. And our lizardmen can't find any. Maybe this makes sense for armies armed and armored in Thane silver (or whatever that even harder armor we are now seeing is called), but for the little folk, most of whom are still fighting with picks or bare handed, these exotic teas may be a luxury we just aren't ready for yet.

Religion Column
---------------

(Written this month by the High Priestess' younger but not youngest sister. Our high priestess is too politically aware to write anything that will offend so many of our friends.)

Some say we have lived before, and will live again. The little folk barely remember any past lives. But many, perhaps most, of the factions we meet remember their past lives vividly. It appears that people who were unkind to each other in a past life are suspicious of each other in this one, and people who were kind to each other in past lives are often kind again in this one. The little folk priests and priestesses have not heard anyone mourn that they remember their own past lives. But we have heard many complain that others remember their own past lives. When we first heard stories like this, we always expected to then hear from them some confession about how they had mistreated others in the past, wished to behave differently now, but were unable to do so because others remembered the harm they had done. To our surprise, we have only heard that story once. The story we always hear instead is that others were kind to each other in their past lives, and it is unfair that they are being kind to each other again in this life.

The story we always hear is a strange complaint. What is so bad about a little kindness?

Perhaps those we hear are truly unhappy that others cooperated to hurt them in the past, and history is now repeating, with those same others cooperating to hurt them again in this world. Listening carefully to the complaints we hear (for listening carefully is the job of a little folk priest or priestess), it seems the unhappiness comes because those who clearly remember their happy relationships in past lives can quickly form happy relationships again in this life, while those who remember their past lives more faintly or not at all (like the little folk) have to spend time seeking and evaluating possible friends, wasting some time with those who will eventually leave us on our own, or even reject us or hurt us. It seems the complaint is that memory of past lives gives an unfair advantage. I (speaking for myself as the little folk high priestess, not speaking for all little folk priests, and certainly not speaking for all of the little folk), am sympathetic to this complaint. I think it is true. I think memory of past lives gives an advantage, if one remembers old friends, and if those friends prove true friends again. It takes a long time to find friends and allies, to vet candidates, date, endure rejections and betrayals, and to handle conflicting obligations when fights break out between one's friends. A group blessed by happy past lives that skips all this and starts this new life months ahead of the rest of us.

Listening carefully is not the only job of a little folk priest or priestess. We are not (supposed to be) just walls, we are (supposed to be) enlightening walls. So now, even though my oracular powers tell me the High Priestess and Our Eldest will both scold me for ignoring politics and offending potential friends, I shall try to get in the middle of an old argument between factions older and wiser than we are. Doing so may be bad politics, but (this priestess thinks) adding light is good religion. (If I'm just adding heat not light, well then probably the balrogs will take me.)

Remembering happy past lives is an (unfair?) advantage. We can pray to our gods to remove unfair advantages from our enemies. But, let a middle aged priestess tell you, in her best Rocky the Flying Squirrel imitation, "that prayer never works". Learning from our enemies usually does work. The gods made us. The gods also made our enemies. My sisters and I spent years studying little folk religious history, and we learned not a single example of our gods responding to prayers complaining of unfairness with "Oh, disciple, you are so right, what were we foolish gods thinking putting enemies like that in your world? We shall unmake them at once." The most common divine response to such prayers has been silence. But one very holy, very lucky little folk saint did get a revelatory dream in response to a similar prayer of complaint centuries ago. The voice of god that he heard in his dream told him, in the kindest possible tone of voice, like a parent or elder sibling, "we put your enemies there for you".

Why our gods (or our enemies' gods) put enemies with unfair advantages in the same world with you us a question each of us must answer ourselves. Perhaps our gods put our enemies here so we should have the sport of struggling with them, instead of the boredom singing Kum-Ba-Yah together. If so, we should before each battle offer our enemies a prayer of thanks for sporting with us. Then we may, with a clear conscience and holy appreciation for the kindness our gods have done by providing us with enemies, attempt to assist our enemies in their ascension to the next plane of existence.

Or perhaps our gods put our enemies here to teach us. Perhaps our gods will keep sending us back to worlds like this one until we learn a lesson. If enemies who hurt us in a past life are hurting us again, with unfair effectiveness because they remember their own happy friendships from the past, then maybe our gods intended exactly this. While our own code of conduct prevents us from remembering harms from past lives, our code of conduct does not prevent objections to hurts in this life. Instead of praying that our enemies forget their old friends, perhaps our gods intended us to learn to make friends of our own? Perhaps our gods require us to put ourselves out there, to talk to our neighbors, to date, risk rejection and betrayal.

The gods have arranged that those who remember happy friendships from past lives will always have a several month head start. But as best as this one, middle aged little folk priestess can tell, the gods have not arranged that we must forever have fewer friends than our enemies have. A priestess knows, the gods are to blame for many, many horrible things. But those to blame for our having fewer friends than our enemies have might not be our gods.

LFLF Column

Has anyone seen Our Eldest? After neglecting his studies for several months, and after abandoning little folk to die in battle, he now seems to have gone completely missing. The little folk liberation front chapter in Yazhnarb assures us he is not there. The little folk liberation front chapter in Stockdare assures us that they grew that village into a town without his help, and that after completing a school for him to study in, he has not returned to occupy the new school. The little folk liberation front chapter in Warrington think he must be in Warrington, because they have seen the High Priestess there, and they don't believe Our Eldest would leave her. But none of them can find him, he must be hiding. There is no good place for him to study in Warrington, so if he is hiding there, he must also be neglecting his studies again. We will alert the little folk liberation front chapters in the far east and in the southern hemicylinder to look for him, but we don't think they will find him, he is probably in Warrington with the High Priestess. How long does Our Eldest have to be absent without leave before the responsibility of government passes from him to the little folk liberation front?

At the LFLF meeting in Warrington, some said the responsibility of government does not pass to the little folk liberation front in Our Eldest's absence, it passes to the High Priestess, because she is second oldest. No cookies for our guests who said that. We patiently explained to those guests with no cookies that this whole idea of being ruled by our most senile has never been good for the little folk; that it is time we gave up that foolish notion and accepted instead government by the most wise and beneficent. Then some other guests, already drinking our tea and eating our biscuits, observed that there was absolutely no evidence that we, the little folk liberation front, are either wise or beneficent. A long argument, with some beer instead of tea ensued. The very holy orcs drank VODK again; I'm glad I'm not an orc. The overall consensus (if there was a consensus) was that there is some truth to the claim that the little folk liberation front are neither wise nor beneficent. Drat. The meeting was saved when one of the cookieless ones suggested that perhaps little folk government should pass from the eldest to those who make the best biscuits. After enough beer and VODK, That seemed to most of the attendees at the meeting a very wise plan; we then proved our beneficence by letting the skeptics have some cookies after all. So now we think if Our Eldest does not soon reappear, government will pass to us, either because we really are wise and beneficent after all, or because everyone agrees the little folk liberation front really does make the tastiest biscuits.

Peace Column
------------

Our Eldest is still summoning demons, and asked one how long the current wars would endure. We expected he would get an "until the rivers stop flowing off the edges of the earth" sort of answer, but instead he was told "another 3 to 6 years". That is encouraging. We may be less than halfway there, but peace is in sight. We hope peace comes sooner rather than later.

Q: How many little folk does it take to kill a sphinx?
A: We don't know, we have never killed one.
The answer must be more than one hundred. 162 little folk died last month, almost one hundred of them to one sphinx. I guess we were lucky we didn't try to kill a dragon, that might have won us a mention in the Times. (This column mourns and honors all those who gave their lives to hunt two dragons.) The little folk who fed the sphinx are too numerous to name in this column, but they will be missed. The little folk inhabitants of neighboring regions nervously wonder how long the sphinx will be sated? Camels are hard to hire, and many little folk are piling their goods into carts and moving away from the sphinx.

Rumors

According to last year's statistics, Holden's citation index was about 60% of the total number of published rumors.
Especially for you, our experts have prepared a new report, according to which this year, out of 58 rumors published from our past research, only 20 contained a mention of Holden.
Thus, we are forced to state that Holden's citation index has fallen by half since the last year.

The new Patriarch has proclaimed an era of tolerance for apostates and plans to provide all temples with dragon eggs.
