The orc next to the singer gave an unwise snigger.

The sergeant's brow furrowed and swivelled to lock on to the adjacent recruit.

The recruit swiftly took a keen interest in the nearest horizon.  "Sergeant, no I do not!"

The sergeant absolutely did not smile.  He did not smile with a grin of spectacular predatory malice.  "Then all that breath is going to waste!  Drop and give me fifty!"

The sergeant inhaled and cast a yellowed eye down the ranks.  "You are not orcs.  You are not soldiers.  You are maggots.  You are halflings.  You are WOOD ELVES TO ME.  But I hold out some hope that some of you may yet become orcs, become soldiers, become templars in the service of HE WHO WAITS BENEATH WITH BIG SHARP POINTY TEETH TO BITE YOU IN THE ASS!  And all I ask in order to guide you down this path of honour to glory, tea, and medals is that you obey my word as if it were the word of the Watcher in Darkness himself.  DO YOU UNDERSTAND!"

The detail, apart from two doing pushups, shouted in agreement.

"You there, the singer. HOW DO YOU FEEL?"

The orc, not particularly athletic, gasped in reply, "Sergeant, I feel tired!"

The sergeant's expression did not change, nor did his voice alter its timbre.  And yet he still managed to convey perfectly clearly the near-limitless disappointment and disdain he felt for this failure of an orc.  "Then you are weak, and we must exercise you so that you become strong.  GIVE ME FIFTY MORE!"

The sergeant turned to the second orc.  "And you, the comedian?  How do you feel?"

The second orc, perhaps somewhat wiser in the way of the world, gasped in return "Sergeant, I feel fine!"

The sergeant gazed down for a moment.  "Excellent. THEN YOU DO NOT NEED TO STOP! GIVE ME FIFTY MORE!"

The sergeant settled back into parade rest and gazed at the horizon beyond the detail.  To no one in particular, he muttered quietly, "Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life."

And this time, there was a hint of a smile.

War always starts somewhere for even small slights.  Murdering the Clans mages because they asked if you wanted help seems a little over the top though.

While being the world leader in rootstone possession (too many deserts to mine, not enough builders and carpenters to use it) was satisfying, the lack of military victory had left the council of The Four Winds restless. Gives Marsh Grain has finished her month of wrist strengthening exercises, and she is eager to start shaking, beating, chastising and pulverizing cookie ingredients.  But her dreams have been suggesting that she will have to leave her desert home if she is ever to become a world class cookie chef.  This makes Gives Marsh Grain sad.  Her mother's grave is here in this desert.  And her mother told her this desert was a key strategic region for the Celebrants, the northern exit of the central sea.  Must she leave her desert home?  Maybe she could stay here by her mother's grave and traders could bring the ingredients to her, bound up in bags so she could more easily shake, beat, chastise and pulverize them?  But her dreams say she must prepare for a journey, so this month she must learn to ride.

Hisschel Bassss celebrates Miss Liza's diving show.  Miss Liza swam over from the mainland several months ago, and has been amazing all of us with her diving prowess ever since.  It is easy to be amazed here; this island is lousy with sea ponies and tropical fruits, but there is nowhere to go, and it is impossible to build a boat without divine intervantion.  It shall be a densely populated island with way too much stored up food and way too many horses soon enough.  Hisschel Bassss wonders whether there might be any flying horses on his little island?

Cwistata celebrates Ed's bane.  This fearsome spirit is now secretly gaining power, and soon shall challenge Ed's monopoly on Celebrant access to the Atlantis Times.  Someday soon, Celebrants shall have an alternative to this accursed ((some celebrant)) celebrates ((something)) format that Ed is so fond of.

Ed celebrates the sticky pirates who serve the Lords of Equity.  Ed has heard that these famous pirates are less than a month away, and that no one knows where they will go next.  Ed really hopes they come visit him.  If the stories Ed has heard about these pirates' previous raids are correct, then a raid of Ed's haunts would be interestingly different than those previous raids.  A more interesting story.  Ed wonders whether the sticky pirates are evil just for the sake of being evil (in which case they might visit this month, which would be exciting), or are they evil as part of some Equity Lords' plan for world domination (in which case they will probably delay their visit, bo-ring).

Zirildatur celebrates the life of Knight Shade.  He was always a helpful advisor to her when she was young.  She still remembers him going off to the north to Ti'igost, which he said was the natural center of the northern lands.  When the City Guard of Ti'igost fell Knight Shade tried to flee, but not soon enough, the invaders found him before he could get away.  The old city guard were tolerant of all factions, they had a "live and let live" attitude.  The new owners of the city apparently did not think it good for Knight Shade to live there.  Should Zirildatur become indignant and march off to avenge Knight Shade's death, or should she compose a song in Knight Shade's honor, sing it, and go on with her life.  The first choice would be more fun.  The second choice would be more prudent.  Zirildaughter fasts, meditates, makes peace with her gods, and chooses to sing the song.  Zirildaughter also promises her gods to name her first born "Prudence".  Zirildatur hopes her firstborn is a girl; a boy dwarf named "Prudence" might get teased terribly.

Bangs celebrates one more month of life.  Bangs wonders whether he should try to get out of Ojou the same way Knight Shade tried to get out of Ti'igost.  Is there any point in fleeing, or is it time to offer his final prayers and make peace with his gods?  The shadow has fallen over Ojou.  Is it good for celebrants to live under the shadow?
