The General looked out over the plains. Something was wrong - he had over a hundred front line troops backed up by tens of archers, but something was missing. The Sphinx. Where was it? He had sent scouts in every direction except one, and it had disappeared. Creatures that big didn't disappear.

One quick message from his allies later, it turned out that the small oversight in scouting had proved a mistake - against all odds, the Sphinx had migrated from the desert to spending a year and a half in the plains, and was now a jungle sphinx. This would negate the advantage of all the mounted troops, and meant there had been no need to gather all those mounts which had taken so long.

The General sighed. Time to play "chase the enemy" and keep looking for the damned creature.

We took Pewnrath today. Bohica didn't let me join the fight. My sweet mistress is actually worried about my safety.

8th of February Year 3

We're sailing south. The miners are getting ready for a quick deployment again. I heard that they will be staying in the mountains after we sail further south next month. The fleet consist of 8 galleons now. It truely became our home. I like this nomadic lifestyle.

14th of February Year 3

I'm getting stronger with each day under Lachdanan's rigorous training. My pain tolerance also increased. Life is not that bad. I even have time to write songs about our voyage. The more time I spend with Bohica the more I learn about drow culture. I suspect that dark elves don't know the concept of equality and mutual trust in a relationship. That explains a lot about my sweet mistress.

21st of February Year 3

Strangely, we still haven't encountered any sea creatures. I know we always use the shortest route between two landmasses and never anchor the fleet far from shore but I expected the sea to be more dangerous. Maybe the sea creatures can sense magic and they avoid our fleet? Bohica is still hell bent on getting me trained in the arcane but I don't think I have the talent for magic. At best I will be able to use a staff or a magic sword. Given how I'm surrounded by twenty magic users I think having a magical item or two on my own would make me feel less useless.

27th of February Year 3

I finished gathering all the reports and presented them to Bohica today. She was pleased with the results. Our army and influence is growing nicely. We not have 2 galleons of our own. The only drawback is that they are located in a region inhabited by centaurs. Not the best sailors in the world. Whoever decided to set up a shipyard in that region was a mo... did not think it through. Well, I can deal with it. All I need is to order some men to move there from Difi.

So, we've got galleons, and a galley. They look wonderful bobbing about, tied to the dock (especially the galley). Bobbing about, tied to the dock, is where they'll stay. Can't afford to send them to sea. They do make for splendid beachfront accommodations though.

Count von Count is most pleased with his new home. Not only does the room in the tower give a splendid view of the ocean, but it's away from that sociopath who leads this Order. Maybe they need someone of noble birth to replace that peasant. Though those powers are scary, he's never seen or learned anything like that. Moreover, the cropped hair and camelskin robes are better for this climate than what he came in with. He doesn't miss his old life in the least.

Are camels better because it is large and strong animal, while pick is just a simple tool? Or are picks better because you need to refine iron to get, while camels roam around in huge herds and every month you could tame some for free?! Who knows?

"There's plenty of iron, but none of the truesilver.  Those Deceit-spawned magi will just have to do some actual work for once and buckle down to do proper enchanting," grumped the senior.  "Even if there was a seam here, it wouldn't produce the volumes they want. I suppose they need it as a raw material for some of the more esoteric conjurations...."  He tailed off, staring at a crevice where the cliff face disappeared into shadow.

"Elder?  Elder Whiteaxe?" The warden waited, then shook the transfixed longbeard.  "Did you see something?  Is it a vein of truesilver?"

WIth glacial slowness the lips of the aged dwarf began to move, curling back from his teeth in a rictus of joy so complete as to be almost painful.
"No lad," said the master miner, grinning like a fool of thirty summers who'd just found mead for the first time.  "It's not truesilver."
