Our Eldest's Column
-------------------
I actually studied last month. I almost never do that. I'm not sure I should have studied, I suspect I should be protecting little folk instead, but the battles are all so very far away. I do wish I knew where some gates were located. And I wish I could bring more than one priestess through the gate with me.
Why can't I be light like a goblin? Then I could bring two priestess, or one priestess and one lightweight travel wardrobe. I have heard of lands where magicians were of the same races as peasants. Wouldn't that be interesting? Different races of magicians might be good at different things.
Old Guard Column
----------------
This is my last column. I have entered a program to retrain as a priest blessing souls as they advance from this plane of existence to the next one. There just isn't enough work reporting on the old guards anymore.
Sphinx Column
-------------
Last month the little folk cohabited with 7 Sphinxes, none of which attacked us. Maybe our musicians are getting better? This month the little folk dwell together with 13 sphinxes. Is 13 a number that is just as lucky as 7?
Mantinik's caravan guards say there are too many sphinxes in the desert. Little folk agree. We would like to bring desert dwelling sphinxes 251, 293, 298, 348, 371, 413, 418, 517, 554, 561, 652, 774, 779, 819, 877, 884, 887, 1926, 4611, 13377, 14101 and 14762 to their attention. Particularly sphinx 298 which the Trade Guild caravan guards chased away but did not kill.
The little folk who live together with sphinx 884 would not object too much if the lion hunters (whom some little folk orcs claim are honored Thane's Ring Spirits) who chased away but did not kill this sphinx would like to finish the job.
If the Children of the Four Winds wish to hunt sphinxes, the little folk will point out that one sphinx resides one month's walk northwest of their scout 6392, another sphinx one month one month's flight north of their scout 5293, and a third sphinx one month's flight northeast of that same scout. If the sphinx hunters of the Children of the Four Winds wish to continue farther north, the little folk will be happy to direct them to ten more sphinxes. The little folk are always happy to direct puissant hunters to sphinxes; we have more sphinxes than we know what to do with.
Deadly Quarrels Column
----------------------
Last month the little folk witnessed more deaths in quarrels between factions than in quarrels with guardsmen and quarrels with monsters. The total number of separate quarrels with monsters (11) was more than double the number of quarrels between factions (5), but 157 men died in one single quarrel between factions, and the sum of all 11 monster attacks killed only 121. Quarrels between factions and guardmen (seen by the little folk) were neglible last month, killing only 53. It seems peace with guardsmen is coming, but peace with monsters is still far off. Peace between factions, well, that's going the wrong way; the number of deaths the little folk see from deadly quarrels between factions is steadily increasing. We had some hope that this might just be because the little folk occupy more lands than they used to, but sadly it is not so; the number of deaths per region is also steadily rising, going from 2 deaths per 3 regions in January to 5 deaths per 4 regions last month.
In April, the little folk witnessed 7 deaths per 4 regions. April was a good month for the advancement of souls, but an excessively busy month for little folk priests.
Viking Language Column
----------------------
The Vikings tell us their language has no word for "excuse me". In foreign lands, their word for "excuse me" best translates as "get out of my way, I'm coming through." Fortunately, little folk are very practiced at getting out of the way.
Religion Column
---------------
(Written by the middle sister, she of the offensive article about remembering past lives.)
My sisters and I are supposed to be safely behind our bodyguards in case of combat. But somehow something went wrong, and we found ourselves in the front line of a battle. We had only 2 swords between us, so my older sister (the High Priestess) and I took those and killed two enemies. We aren't sure how we did this, because the enemies knew how to use swords and we did not; the gods smiled on us, perhaps? Our youngest sister was unable to kill a guard unarmed, but did survive the battle. Nothing like a brush with death to inspire one to study combat, or wear armor, or make some of those teas we were asked to make. Probably none of that will matter again, probably we will forever after be behind our bodyguards. But even so, armor would be very nice to have. A goblin can't carry much armor, but if we have camels, maybe we could wear at least leather?
LFLF Column
-----------
If Our Eldest were here among us helping us, we could drive away our own sphinxes and maybe even liberate Stockwood without having to beg Martinik's caravan guards and Thane's Ring Spirits to do the job for us. The little folk need leaders willing to fight, not leaders who want to spend all their time studying.
Music Column
------------
Little folk musicians were completely successful at calming 7 sphinxes last month. We try for 13 this month.
Peace Column
------------
The only faction that has asked for votes is the faction that promises winter will come on schedule, but only if we vote for them. The little folk have often wished for weather to break the monotony; this endless desert has no seasons. Is it truly the case that if enough factions vote for 49, we shall afterward find ourselves again in a place where winter comes once each year? Having seasons again would be so nice. And as a nice side effect, I think a majority vote brings peace. We could have seasons and peace. How could anyone vote against that?
Obituary Column
---------------
Last month, the number of advances to the next plane of existence slowed. Whew. In January the little folk witnessed 205 such transitions. We were busy performing funeral rites, but there were enough little folk to ease the grief of the survivors, and to say farewell to the souls advancing beyond our world. In February, 443 transitions. We hurried from one goodbye to the next. In march, only 263 transitions, we rested a bit. But in April, there were 560 transitions from this world to the next, and our priests and morticians had to run from service to service trying to ensure that every soul was blessed in its departure. In April, we barely helped the bereaved survivors at all. In May, last month, mercifully things slowed down again, and only 436 souls needed our blessings. But we fear what June will bring. The little folk are hiring more priests. Do you want to spend your life blessing souls as they pass from this world to the next? Contact a little folk temple. Blessing advancing souls looks to be steady work until the election; a safe career choice.

Kiiran (39)
One unfortunate diplomatic incident later, the monster hunting expeditionary force retreated. They had missed the monsters (who must have moved first) and advanced into a neighbouring empire by accident, killing some farmers. The Ambassador would not be happy at having to grovel with the neighbours, hopefully the large expanse of desert between them would create enough room to avoid further disasters.

"Well, I think she's quite cute, really."
The priest turned to regard the goblin with a fairly hard stare.
"Cute."
The goblin shrugged.
"Well, she's got those little furry paws, and little sharp claws, and those radiantly iridescent feathers..."
The priest's continued to stare at the goblin. That stare was not becoming significantly less hard as the seconds ticked by.
"It is forty foot from nose to tail, a byword for merciless treachery, and if you get it's riddle wrong it will eat you. Now get back to building that wall."
