The General was sat reading the newspapers when he spluttered and spat out his tea.
"Other factions are boasting of their steel defenders! You know what this means...there is a FREE MOVING ITEMS GAP! We must immediately build some to close this threat!" he screamed.

At the council of the Four Winds, they received the latest military requisitions request.
"Do we have enough skilled labour to do this?" asked the North Wind.
"Yeah, we have that guy who does magic wagons - he can knock one of these up. It would involve spending nearly all our iron stockpile, and some of the precious rootsone" replied the West Wind.
"Well then, we may as well humour him - this will save on maintenance costs and provide something for our archers to hide behind."

The rootstone miners were puzzles that anyone was using their produce for something other than Magical Towers and Fortresses, but they were pleased there was increased demand.

It hurts. Losing people always hurts, but when you lose your best soldiers in a stupid side mission it really hurts. There is nothing that can be done now to change what happened, but hopefully we have learned something from the experience: If our soldiers are going to give their lives, at least make the cause worthwhile. It is time to have some words with Little Pete.

From the diary of Garthan Silvertong:

4th of July Year 3

We had two glorious battles this week with plenty of fireworks to go around.
First we cleared the crypts of all undead. They fell to sword and fire and holy magic quite easily. We only lost two men who managed to get themselves cornered in one corner of the crypts. The next day we ambushed the ice dragon. The poor creature had no chance as dozens of fireballs landed on her sleeping body. Never knew what hit her. I doubt she even had time to wake up. We scored a few trinkets. I'm so happy. I have a windchime to play with when we set sail next.

12th of July Year 3

Kresius spent a week studying the battlegrounds. I accompanied him but going through piles of bones trying to fit the pieces back to gether is boring stuff. Frankly, I didn't see the point. You raise some undead and in a month or two they just decay to dust. Then after the crypts we checked out the corpse of the dragon. Kresius wanted to see if he could put the damn creature back to gether and raise it as a dracolich but the corpse was too damaged to try anything with it. Who would want a two legged dracolich with one wing missing? Anyway, I took a scale fragment as a memento. It will be a perfect pick for my lute.

15th of July Year 3

I spent two days working on the scale fragment sanding and polishing it. It was hard as hell. But I got a nice dark blue lute pick in the end. I composed a song to remember the dragon by. I'll sing it to Bohica tonight.

16th of July Year 3

Bohica liked my song well enough but I suspect that killing dragons might be more common a feat where she came from. She's an incredible being my drow mistress. I barely know anything about her.

21st of July Year 3

Regdan failed to create a staff today. This was his second attempt. He did not have any big mishap this time. He only managed to burn the raw materials. He was quite depressed so I invited him for a drink and played him the Fall of the Ice Dragon I composed a week earlier. That seemed to cheer him up. I'm sure he'll succeed eventually. Until that time I have my windchime I can practive with. I can't wait for the fleet to set sail.

25th of July Year 3

More undead were spotted in a previously enclosed part of the crypt. Admiralty decided to have the fleet stay a bit longer until we clear out that infestation as well. They seem smaller and they don't have a lich to lead them so it should be a routine excercise. We'll see.

Ok, so we've graduated from beating up on wildlife, and ogre families, to taking on the bigger monsters. I've got to say however the Great Ape was a bit of a disappointment. Firstly, he didn't put up much of a fight, and all we got for a reward was some silver and mushrooms. Mushrooms? And there wasn't enough silver to pay the troops wages, much less encourage them to go after more dangerous monsters.

Grumhilde, third daughter of Grunwald the Duke of the Island of Cerfomonia, across the corner of the northern edge of this cylindrical world, sailed into the city on a fast clipper. The people of the city had never seen such a craft, and under an astonishing number of sails on four masts it rushed past the Northerners' picket craft scouting around the fleet carrying troops to the other city to be liberated from a decadent city council and depraved city guard corps. Nothing that had ever sailed this part of the world could match a third of the clipper's speed - onlookers wondered whether a winged horse could even keep up with it. By the time Percival on his eagle had crossed the city to scout it, it had already pulled up at the docks. Grumhilde was most eager to learn the ways of the order and to serve Nergal, as a lost proselytizer had somehow found his way to her father's realm due to a bungled gate lore spell. Best not ask the Grandmaster about that if you don't want to experience a session with the lead torturer. Though some people may like that sort of thing.

Happily, she came to the city from the docks, so she was not subjected to the Secret Police Headquarters with the rather repulsive display and disgusting stench of Xorphan the Beastly on the side of the building facing the marketplace and the main gate to the Northwest. The flags of the ancien regime were already taken down and burned, while the Order's banner, a device with a blood-crimson triangle wedged into an ebony-black circle on a snow-white background was being put up on key buildings. Many of the peasants had queued up to have it tattooed on their bodies lest anyone question their loyalty to the new regime.

After paying the VAT on her luxury goods in the form of a large silver bar of such purity and craftsmanship that the taxman had never seen, but clearly sound and correct weight, she presented herself to the Pfundmeister seeking to learn the art of quartermaster (or should that be quartermistress?)

The Pfundmeister sat at his desk in front of a vast fenced depot. Here there was a stack of iron ingots, both mined locally and brought in from afar. There under tarps, though it rarely rains in this desert, was an enormous stack of furs and skins. Everywhere there were piles of stone blocks.

Clerks ran back and forth, bringing sheets of paper to the Pfundmeister, who carefully inspected each before agreeing, stamping them with his chopmark as he slid the beads of one abacus out of several arrayed on the side of his desk. Each abacus was labeled with a type of good. Once the order was complete, the clerk would jab the completed sheet on a spike above the abacus.

"Brother Jakub! Make that sending of the stone to the north recurring! They will need blocks of stone each month, not just once! That road work will be ongoing til the winter ! Must be hard work in the tundra even when deliveries are on time." More forms, more stamps, more beads sliding on an abacus...

Such a primitive method of accounting for incoming and outgoing materials, she thought. But clearly it worked despite the dozens of movements each month.

Grumhilde expressed astonishment that the Pfundmeister could bring order out of this chaos. "Oh no, my dear, it's just too hard to keep track of the incomings and outgoings. We just take the orders and if they don't look like a priority put them off, and hope that we have enough. Last month we teleported the picks right out of the hands of our miners to send them to the next province, for example. We don't even know when in the month the deliveries come, so even if we know that the next province will produce enough, we don't know if we'll get them in time."

Grumhilde was nevertheless impressed with the Pfundmeister's can-do spirit! She wished to train in the arts of the quartermaster/mistress. "Look, lady, I'm sure you're very respected in your home domain. But this is an order of warrior monks, not warrior nuns."

"But look, I have the art!" She caused the Pfundmeister's chair to levitate, with him still in it. The Pfundmeister, after a long history of working with the Grandmaster, was not easily cowed by such displays - the Grandmaster had much more of a flair for excessively dramatic displays of magic, as the Count von Count found out in a rather unpleasant way last year, not to mention Xorphan the Beastly.

"My dear, we don't use magic to move the items! You're in the wrong business!"

"How then do you move the goods across tundra, desert, and sea instantly?"

"Let me show you."

In the center of the depot was a large flat plate, about 3m in diameter, glowing. Two workers took examined a stamped order form, specifying the quantity and type of goods and source and destination, and manipulated an angled table with strange glowing symbols and lettering on it. They pushed a lever, and suddenly a block of stone appeared on the disk, having disappeared from elsewhere in the depot. They repeated the procedure, slightly differently though she could not perceive the difference, and the block disappeared in a shimmering light, reappearing in the next province instantly with no great effort.

"That's not magic?" Grumhilde asked with disbelief

"Why no, almost all the empires of the cylinder have these. There was a great battle in the sky some years ago, and metal ships fell from the outer world. These machines still work, but not much else. Our desert gets lots of sun, those dark plates you see back there capture the sun's energy and uses it to power the machine."

"Could you move an army and invade the whole world?"

"No animal matter can pass without liquefying. We've tried with camels and llamas, and wow what a mess. For some reason fish seem to work though, but not turtles. M suggested using it for executions, but the Grandmaster, in his great wisdom, prefers to be more humane than that to the cleaners who would have mop all that up."

"Who's M?"

"The head of the Order Secret Police of course. His reputation is known throughout the cylinder. Woe betide he who falls to one of his counterintelligence operations. But as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, we don't do such dramatic executions except of course for spies and war criminals, those get a special punishment fitting their crimes, as you might see by the city gates - though I suppose Xorphan the Beastly's most severe crimes weren't really political but of a different nature, but most of us would say that even makes him deserve his fate yet more."

Pleased that he wasn't interrupted again, the Pfundmeister continued.

"Mere common criminals are punished in a less brutal fashion. That said, we think the people who built it used it for moving people around, but this is really a bootleg setup and it just doesn't work as well as it should. So, you have to use our own gate magic for moving people, but that's limited in how much you can move at a time, while this tool we can move many tons a day within its range."

"Oh. So, you could you use it to liquefy our enemies when they attack by trying to teleport them?"

"No of course we can't do that, unless they stay very still all day. Nor can we teleport stone blocks above their heads to fall on them nor crossbow bolts into their eyes before you ask. Now begone, child, I have much work to do that doesn't involve your tedious questioning. Maybe the Grandmaster can find some use for your talents."

The rest of story of how Grumhilde from the northern plane of the world became the Landmeisterin Grumhilde of the mountains will be told another day.

The Law: Paying of Taxes

Let every person be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. Therefore, whoever opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God; those who have taken a stand against it will bring judgment against themselves. For those rulers are an object of fear, not to the good deed, but to the bad. Do you want to be free of fear of the authority? Keep doing good, and you will have praise from it; for it is God’s minister to you for your good. But if you are doing what is bad, be in fear, for it is not without purpose that it bears the sword. It is God’s minister, an avenger to express wrath against the one practicing what is bad.

There is therefore compelling reason for you to be in subjection, not only on account of that wrath but also on account of your conscience.

The guard commander felt justifiably pleased with himself. The invaders had come on the same old way, and the guard had beat them the same old way. He could not fault their bravery, first the general, then the elites, and finally the mob, each marching into the swords of the orc-host, but what good bravery that led such brave fools to their deaths?

Now, it was time for the guard to return to the settlement. The pursuit of the stragglers had pulled them out of position, and if there was a fourth force, it might fall upon them while their formation resembled more a ragged mob than a disciplined guard force.

Above, the section leader waited for the signal as they inexorably beat their way above the orc force on the field below. Was he not the Best? Would not his mount not fall with great wrath upon the enemy below?

Behind the main group, the strike leader's thoughts turned briefly back to his youth, of wading barefoot through the shallows of the river Clare, before drawing his blade. He was the Mac Bloscaigh of Mac Bloscaigh, and no orc would lay him low. Filling his lungs, he gave the ululating cry, as the undaunted cavalry as one folded their wings and stooped upon their prey.
