And so Living Water is dead again.
Thane's Ring (10)
The General stood before the steel defender, its glossy skin shining in the sun and disguising the rootstone core and vast quantities of leather inside.

"This is amazing! What can we do with it?" he asked.
"Ummm.....give it to the taxers to pad out their ranks in case of damage? Set it loose and hope it works?" the technican replied.

The General decided that keeping it as part of defenses for the archers to hide behind was safer than setting it loose. You never knew when another monster might spawn.

From the diary of Garthan Silvertong:

3rd of August Year 3

That's it. The crypts are completely undead free now. We spent a day checking after the battle then another celebrating our victory. Half the soldiers go so drunk after celebrating the that they missed the departure of the fleet. Some of them will likely starve because we loaded all the supplies. It would be a shame if logistics killed more men than the actual monsters we've been fighting. Oh well.

8th of August Year 3

Today I went to ask Regdan if it would be possible to combine my windchime with a bagpipe or a horn to but he threw me out of his lab. All he can think about is staves and how to apply magic for military use. But there are so many other possibilities. Maybe the mages of The Culture would be more receptive to my ideas about self-operating musical instruments?

13th of August Year 3

Regdan finally managed to create his very first staff of fire. I am so excited. He says he still need to engrave some runes then we should have a ritual binding the artifact to me. Then I'll need to practice with it day and night to master my new staff. Can't wait.

16th of August Year 3

We've been sailing these waters for almost two years now yet we never encountered a kraken yet. Our forces should be big enough now to kill such a creature. I'll suggest it to the admiralty. With the increased administration load I'm running low on ink. Our fishermen keep producing the stuff from squids but a kraken would set me up for life.

22nd of August Year 3
Lester borrowed my staff to copy the runes that Regdan etched into the wood. He wants to create flaming swords. At the same time the culture mages decided to have barrels of water and sand positioned at every 5 meters on board the ship and they are not subtle about it. I guess operating magical forges that churn out flaming swords warrant the extra precaution.

28th of August Year 3

5 more galleons joined our fleet. The mages are pleased. More galleons mean more labs on board. They no longer have to shuffle around. And they will actually need my sorry ass to keep using the windchime I got to speed up the fleet.

Alfonso the smuggler, notorious evader of VAT, teleported to just outside the holy city by the main sewer sluice gate, where the drainwater exited into the sea well away from the settlement, the harbor, and fishing grounds. Things changed a lot since he was last there. That old City Council's flag, depicting two hands choking a neck (rather fitting for their style of government), that emblazoned all the major structures was replaced with new banners on the city wall, some abstract red white black geometric shapes. New building works all over, many still in progress. A weird moaning coming from the northwest city gate by the marketplace, that for some reason reminded him of that captain of the City Guard he used to have to bribe. What happened here?

Too dark to make it all out in the dimming sunlight, as he always timed his journeys to be right after sunset, knowing the guards' shift change and the desert glare from the west would aid his sneaky entry. Never mind those thoughts about banners and construction, he had literally a ton of chocolate to bring into the city and sell in defiance of the Order's strictures and without paying customs duties. Opening the maintenance hatch that he always used, he entered the sewage tunnel and walked along the gangway, dragging the huge payload of chocolate behind him.

Halfway through the passage, he started wondering... Were there footsteps behind him? No one ever came this way, the system was engineered so well that maintenance was decennial. He must be imagining things. "Concentrate, Alfonso, just another run, buy some export goods and another big payday. Payola! A mountain of silver!" Now he was thinking about the weird juxtaposition of bringing all that chocolate through tunnels filled with sticky brown material and the idea of making a substitution to see if he could make even more profit - the fools in this city wouldn't know the difference. He coudn't help giggling.

Now footsteps in front?

What will happen to Alfonso now? Will he succeed in selling his illicit chocolate? Will he substitute sewage for chocolat and sell even more? Are those customs officials, sewage workers, bandits, or just a hallucination he's heard? Find out, in the next edition of the Atlantis Times!

The study still lead nowhere. Bones and rotting meat. What it feels like to starve.

“I GET dizzy and my stomach feels cold.” The African woman was trying to describe to a reporter what it felt like to starve. Said another resident of a drought-stricken region of South Africa: “We lose all our strength to the extent that we are not able to laugh, cry, see, or breathe.”

It is one of the worst ways to die.

Well, I would say something poetic about the dust clearing after the battle, but battles in the swamp are mostly dust-free. Wish I could say the same for the mud; made it a bit hard to tell friend from foe, when everyone looks like they just rolled in a bog.

In any event, the city is ours; we took surprisingly few losses... I will enjoy chiding the generals for months about their timidity.

Hiring even more troops, because the troops needed to take the city aren't sufficient to tax the entire populace... A happy problem to have, no doubt.

Under Pressure (57)
It was perhaps the oddest meal the captain had partaken of.

Scouts of three factions, her own crew, and the mix of orcs and gnolls who seemed to be the largest faction in this dank isthmus.

Some wore no insignia. Some had their emblem worn proudly. All were... at least a little circumspect. Most spoke, in low tones, of bad food and ticks in the bedding and that pain in the lower back that came with horseriding or pulling an oar or harvesting... probably mud, to look around here.

Yet in the morning all would part, hers to continue their portage and others to hail the village to the southeast.
The captain hoped it would stay as peaceful.

At walking distance from the gate, near the forest, the very active port of Snaside (14.36) with several very busy factions.
