Our Eldest's Column
-------------------

I went to visit some wonderful friends. It became time to say goodbye, and my staff prepared my itenerary. Shortly before my departure, my staff let me know that my very kind friends intended to make a gift to me of a herd of white elephants before my departure. This is a kingly gift. And a fine way to travel if one needs elephants to carry one's burdens. Unfortunately, my staff had prepared for me a different mode of travel, for which elephants are something to be carried, not something to help carry. Well, no problem, I am Our Eldest after all, in principle (if not in practice) I have access to the entire wealth of the little folk. Surely we can afford to carry a few elephants.

My staff informs me that increasing my cargo capacity to carry all the elephants would take more than a year of preparation. Now this is a hard diplomatic problem. How can one politely refuse a kingly gift like a herd of white elephants without offending the king that gives them? I can't ask the quartermaster to help me, his transport comes after my transport departs. Perhaps I need to hire a head groom?

Weather Column
--------------

Great Horde's soldiers want more lairs and more places to liberate. The little folk have more magician's towers than we know what to do with. We have heard rumors that magicians' towers have good loot. We cannot confirm these rumors, having never won a battle with magicians. How much clear skies study is required to survive a lightning bolt anyway?

The little folk are getting angry with the sky. The only weather we ever see surrounds the magicians' towers. Everywhere else, every season the sky says to the little folk "the weather is (naturally) clear this month. The weather will be (naturally) clear next month." This weather is boring. Little folk are beginning to congregate around magicians towers, despite the danger, because it is the only place we can find any weather. (And the little folk musicians seem to play better in the rain.) Bring on the winter. There is a faction that promised winter if enough cities vote for it. Maybe the little folk will vote for it. Weather!

Geography Column
----------------

Desert Eagles asks whether sailing in the ocean is the answer. If desert eagles have found much ocean, they have explored farther than we have. All the "oceans" the little folk have found are tiny lakes and rivers. Maybe the ocean is in the underworld? Perhaps there is an underworld, but no non-magical access to it, and we haven't studied the right magic yet?

Puzzle Column
-------------

If a world has N gates, what is the likelihood that all N will have been visited after M random gate jumps? Answer next month.

Peace Column
------------

The little folk are pleased to see less fighting between factions last month. Maybe everyone has decided to just get along. It worries us a bit that we see more and more advanced weaponry being constructed. But we also see even more defenses being built, including some truly amazing unmanned mobile defenses. (How did anyone ever get enough furs to build those?) Maybe this means we are headed toward a peaceful stalemate where no one dares break the peace by attacking another faction?

The little folk peace columnist worries a bit about this election the faction who promised winter mentions. We are sure the winter factions means well, but can bringing up political questions really make us live together more peacefully? It is quiet now, but if tentative election results are announced, will today's quiet be replaced with loud claims that some factions have more than their share of votes?

Grammar Column
--------------

Dear Miss Goblin Grammar;

Last month I read in the Standard Goblin edition of the Times the message "Blood in — Blood out!" from Blood Angels. How should I interpret the em-dash and exclamation point? ——Puzzled!

Dear Puzzled!;

It is possible that a printing error increased the apparent width of the dash in your newspaper. In Miss Goblin Grammar's Standard Goblin edition of the Times, "Blood in" and "Blood out" are separated by an en-dash, not an em-dash. Miss Goblin Grammar obtained several other copies of the same paper from her friends, and although the length of the dash varied a bit, perhaps revealing something about the Times' printing process, the distribution of dash lengths was much more consistent with an en-dash occasionally lengthened by imperfections in the paper or printing process than an em-dash occasionally shortened. Miss Goblin Grammar suggests you examine your em-dash with a magnifying glass to see if you see any flaw in the paper that could explain its width. She also suggests you examine whether your em-dash is centered, as it would be if correctly printed, or whether it extends closer to "in" than to "Blood" or vice versa, as might happen if the dash were lengthened by a printing error.

"Blood in - Blood out" is almost certainly wording produced by an apprentice translator who did not know that Standard Goblin has a single word for the organ that pumps blood. "Heart!" has multiple possible interpretations. "Heart" most often is a symbol for romantic or platonic attraction or for gratefulness, but "heart" is also occasionally used to denote the spirit and fortitude of fighting men. It is certainly possible that Blood Angels were conveying a message of romantic attraction or love or gratefulness, and were their message "heart" alone, that would be the most likely interpretation. But their message was "heart!", and the punctuation changes the most likely meaning. Love or gratefulness can be very strong feelings, perhaps the strongest of feelings, but the exclamation point is rarely used to express them. An exclamation point is more often used to convey the urgent imperatives of fighting men. So Miss Goblin Grammar believes Blood Angels were not expressing love towards all (a very angelic feeling), but instead attempting to rally us, to encourage us in the face of adversity. Miss Goblin Grammar believes Blood Angels' "Heart!" is most likely the Times' translator's attempt to render into Goblin "Take Heart!" or "Remain Steadfast!" or some other rallying cry. Blood Angels are trying to rally us all. Not as angelic as expressing love towards all, but, well, these are "Blood Angels", servants of the gods of blood. They may be a bit more violent than the peaceful domestic gods and godesses goblins are used to.

Music Column
------------

The peace columnist reports that it is peaceful, and that few attacks of factions on other factions are now seen. We all seem to be very civilized and proper, driving out the monsters but leaving each other alone. The little folk monster musicians report that the monsters are more afraid of civilization than they were. They also report hearing a lot of "civilized" knights singing "Fie on goodness, fie". We are unsure this song bodes well for a lasting peace.

Gron Grudgebeard spat once more on the cooling steel, causing it to sizzle.
"That there, that's the sound of a flawed blade, you goateed nithling. Here we are, a month's march from the sphinxes and kongs. behind good walls, with nothing to do but produce the weapons that will keep those monsters far away, and you turn out this garbage."

The Grudgebeard looked up at the apprentice to see the effect of his critique, and was gratified to see the young dwarf's pallor. Then he realised the fear in her eyes was not directed at his wroth, and turned to follow her gaze over the battlement.

"An ogre clan? Bah. Ironbowel's lads will have then for breakfast and be back in time for tea and medals."

The apprentice pointed a shuddering hand beyond the gross beast.

"Scorpions? Mention them not. Their venom won't even scar the stone."

The apprentice's arm continued to rise to point up into the sky.

"Demons as well as scorpions and ogres?" The Grudgebeard paused to think for a moment. "Actually, you're quite right, youngling. We're buggered."
