What did Corvin Ravens do to gain so much notoriety? More articles about Ravens than about Holden last month. Holden is congratulating the Ravens' quick learning. We have to agree with Holden; the Ravens started about when we did, and the Ravens are now much, much more advanced than we are. Ravens are smart dinosaurs. Ravens are at the top of the September class, little folk are farther down the roll, in the middle of the class with the average students. When we read the Times last month, we were both impressed with the Ravens' skills, and worried for the Ravens' health. In last month's Times we read that Torwin had fallen, Ravens were catched, and Ravens were banned from the land of unpronounceable names. The articles in last month's Times all seemed bad for ravens; we feared ravens might lose interest in the world like our first ally. We felt bad for the poor ravens and wondered whether we should prepare a sympathy card and care package, but we weren't sure where to send it; we haven't seen many ravens in our little piece of this world. Fortunately, according to more recent rumors, Ravens escaped the catching by magic. So the ravens are still in the game, and still at the top of our September class. Interesting.

Sphinx Column
-------------

Apparently 7 sphinxes are still enough to kill a few (261, to be precise) little folk. Is anyone still interested in hunting sphinxes? Perhaps Our Eldest is right, and we should stay inside Thane's nice, safe ringway.

Old Guard Column
----------------

At least two cities and one town are still protected by the Old Guard.

LFLF Column
-----------

Still no word from Our Eldest. Maybe the government works better when he's not around? Imagine what the little folk liberation front could do with 6 rings of power. We could get rid of our Eldest, start assassinating bad people right and left, really put the little folk on the map, and really rid the world of badness. Our Eldest has no interest in making rings of power, but maybe ice dragons have rings of power in their hordes? Are ice dragons easier to kill than sphinxes?

Quiet Column
------------

When we first entered this world, assination reports read "... is caught attempting to assassinate ..." Since then, all assassination reports have read "... is assassinated ... assassin escaped unnoticed". Did something change? Why do the assassins always win now? Do monsters hoard more rings than amulets, or do we all study more stealth than observation? Maybe the problem is that one amulet protects only one individual from an assassin with a ring?

Peace Column
------------

We are saddened to see more war between factions last month. We had hope that factions really were going to give peace a chance. We could still change our minds, beat our swords into lassos and nets, and grow our villages and towns instead of fighting each other. It is not too late.

Obituary Column
---------------

Urist meqq Bedwyr, looking for a way over the edge of the world, was slain by an ice dragon and 35 undead. The lich was superfluous.
Urist Derelei Duchtair, also searching for where the water goes when it flows north over the edge of the world, was slain by a different ice dragon.
261 little folk were slain by sphinxes.

The General looked up and down at the troops to inspect. The expeditionary force was smaller than expected, having suffered casualties against monsters. The huge rabble of civil defense troops, given a month's training and maybe an axe or spear for every other troop, were in rude health.

For a creature with a muzzle, the gnoll did a fairly credible job of sucking its breath in through its teeth.

"Sorry guv'nor, I don't think I can accept this."

Eirik Steelbowels tugged rather sharply at the braids of his beard, his frustration beginning to leak out around his eyes, which had become so bloodshot that they began to resemble the glow of the firemountain some leagues behind his shoulder.

"And. Why. EX-ACTLY. Can. You. Not Accept. This?" asked the dwarf with the sort of flat menace in his tone that would have sent lesser creatures looking for a rootstone fortress to cower within.

"'Snot a valid order. Dunno how to do that fing there." The gnoll pointed helpfully at the parchment with the requisition order on it.

"Which thing?" repeated the dwarf, peering closer, beard in one hand while the other started to twitch towards the axe hanging from a belt loop.

"TRANSPORT. You've spelt it with an extra 'R'. And there, and there, and there." The gnoll gave off a certain fatuousness that made Steelbowels seriously consider for a moment whether you could use gnoll in a po'shintang stew.

"So you are telling me that you understand the order perfectly well, but choose not to execute it because you want to critique my spelling?" asked the dwarf in a worryingly-flat tone.

The gnoll's muzzle waved down and up as he nodded, and was just opening when the flat face of the axe caught him full on and laid him out cold on the warehouse floor.

The dwarf straightened his shoulders and his beard, returned his axe to the belt loop, and strode off, only pausing at the doorway. "And it's 'spelled', not 'spelt'. 'Spelt' is a grain, which you can bloody well TRANSPORT when you wake up."
