The General was exceedingly happy. The grand lich-hunting army was under sail and would have enough funds to make it, attack the lich and get back....no wait, the funds were a month short. If the lich-hunting didn't sustain serious casualties, the troops would not quite have enough cash to make it back, and tundras were well known for having insufficient tax revenue to sustain the army in the field, even by pillage (which the locals would certainly not appreciate).

The General asked if there were any ships free to form a relief effort. As it happened, a galleon had just been built to ship excess agricultural produce around the coast to towns where the price was highest. If instead it delivered the grain to the returning army while they were on the way home, they would not starve.

One more logistical oversight by the General averted.

There is this feeling month over month that the next one will be easier to administer. That road should be completed by then. These units will master the skills that they need. Those trade routes will be flowing like water. But somehow, the month when all that happens is always the next one.
Maybe we just need to pack a boat and sail for a while, a cruise may lift our day to day burdens.

From the diary of Garthan Silvertong:

6th of October Year 3

My fire staff is awesome! I managed to kill the ice dragon with it. Granted, I had plenty of help. The troops kept it busy while Lester summoned a tornado then Regdan and I lit the creature on fire. Bohica was very pleased with me. Especially when we found eight cornucopias among the heap of silver coins in the dragon's lair.

14th of October Year 3

We are sailing south again. The fleet moves slower now that we have more ships than what we can speed up with wind magic. Admiralty is alking about splitting the fleet. Regdan managed to create another staff. That's his third one. Lester also produced a flaming sword. It's less powerful than my staff but it's more warrior-like. Maybe I should trade my staff for one of Lester's swords? But then I'd have to fight from the front line. I think I'm better off with my staff.

20th of October Year 3

Bohica gained true sight. There is nothing that would escape her attention. It's pretty frightening. I tried to surprise her with some flowers today but she knew about them the moment I boarded our ship. She acted sweet and all but I can't get the thought out of my head that she's like an allseeing demigod of the old legends. My mistress is really something now. I wonder what will be her next goal. Balrogs? Back wind?

27th of October Year 3

Administration work is killing me. I think I'll have to hire some helpers. Organizing the logistics for our whole empire is a real pain. Bohica says I should just focus on the troops but feeding and arming them is still a big undertaking. At least no-one starved lats month.

A quandary it is. There are rewards to be had, monster hunting. However, the most rewarding monsters take an expensive army/navy to subdue. The accountants will be up late tonight.

Also, never send to know for whom the clock ticks; it ticks (and tocks) for thee.

By the hand of Nergal, Alfonso the Smuggler and notorious tax evader was finally captured! A dozen gnomes with red white and black insignia on their tunics wielding crossbows surrounded him - even if he cast a perfect fireball it couldn't get all of them before the others could loose their bolts - and so he surrendered his illicit chocolate cargo and regretted not making further study of the fire spell. He was put in a wagon in chains and trundled off to Fort Ludios, which was equally good at keeping criminals in as it was in keeping attackers out. A small fort, yet cunningly built so that a few dozen skilled defenders could hold off a force triple their number.

The goblin peasantry, still used to the grotesque spectacles of public executions of the ancien regime and tired of the wholesome educational theatre that replaced gladiator pits as the main source of entertainment in the city, gathered most expectantly. The crowd of goblins outside Fort Ludios's main gate chanted with anticipation and delight "Punish! Punish! Punish!" The Grandmaster, witnessing this awful spectacle of sadism, was deeply depressed. What must he do to teach these peasants to be more enlightened? Can the flaws of their nature really not be overcome?

Indeed, for mere economic crimes, the Order was infinitely more forgiving than the goblin peasants. War criminals, abusers of children, spies, upsetters of the public order, heretics... Now those should truly dread their fate and a crack team of researchers are diligently working out how to give these that which they deserve, even before Nergal the Most Mighty has a chance to send them to Hell.

But what will the Order's ordinary criminal judges do to Alfonso the Smuggler? What penalty will they come up with for someone who smuggled chocolate through the sewers to avoid paying VAT? Will they drown him in a chamberpot? Will they boil him in a big pot of hot cocoa? That will come after a brief commercial message!

While our allies amused themselves with extermination of mega fauna and some "evildoers", we had a look at the crypt. And found exactly nothing. Unless you count all the stuff left by the armies that trampled through on their way there and back. Including "We Wus Her" left by some semi-literate soldiers, by the amounts of red involved one would think orcs.

Sometimes a settlement is necessary even for the trading guild to capture the excess profit margin. But what if the traders does not possess sufficient forces to wrestle control of stubborn guards that deny that profit margin. Then it is a time to share that profit margin with other faction mercenaries that supply the helping hand.

Prophesy: The Defeat of Egypt

“Prepare your bucklers and large shields,
And advance to the battle.
Harness the horses and mount, you horsemen.
Take your positions and put on your helmets.
Polish the lances and put on your coats of mail.

‘Why do I see them terror-stricken?
They are retreating, their warriors are crushed.
They have fled in panic, their warriors have not turned around.
There is terror all around,’ declares Jehovah.

‘The swift cannot flee, and the warriors cannot escape.
In the north, by the bank of the Euphrates River,
They have stumbled and fallen.’
Who is this coming up like the Nile River,
Like the rivers of surging waters?

Egypt comes up just like the Nile River,
Like rivers of surging waters,
And it says, ‘I will go up and cover the earth.
I will destroy the city and those inhabiting it.’

Go up, you horses!
Drive madly, you chariots!
Let the warriors advance,
Cush and Put, who handle the shield,
And the Ludim, who handle and bend the bow.

Oct 1. Today our expedition sets out. The ice dragon had a nice meeting at the north tundra with Captain Nemo, who landed on the shore. She took great joy at the thought of him torpedoing shipping from his U Boat and she gets to scoop up the survivors. They won't know what hit them! No fighting back with swords against an underwater craft! And no mage's fireball spell will do much good when launched from in the sea. She is going to feast this winter on northerners flesh!

What are Captain Nemo's motivations? Some weird pacifist ideology. How that goes with torpedoing fleets of galleons she neither understands nor cares to try to figure out.
