Our Eldest's Column
-------------------

It takes a very long time to learn to summon Balrogs. And according to the stories they aren't exactly team players. Maybe it would be easier to just make the youth potions? Should we be mastering herblore for some herb rarer than mushrooms, or are youth potions somehow distilled from the foods that elves eat, or the songs that elves sing. (I found one old manuscript claiming that youth potions are distilled from elves, but the author of that manuscript has dies, so I'm going to guess that idea didn't work out.)

Religion Column
---------------

Who are the good guys? Kiiran asked last month "How do you stab the devil in the back? What if you miss?" If by "the devil" Kiiran means Thanzer Thosay, I believe Thanzer has issued an honorable challenge that none have risen to accept. If one side is requesting invitations to contests of honor, even offering the choice of some details of the challenge to whoever is bold enough to invite him, and the other side is ignoring the request for invitations to honorable combat, and instead discussing stabbing the first side in the back, which side is honorable? The north is indeed on fire, but does not this fire burn because we will not grant an honorable invitation to settle our differences in the light? Thanzer and his allies can apparently appear wherever they wish, but instead of using this power to surprise us when we are weak, they ask for an invitation to attend an event at a known location and time. Why do the other great powers of this world all refuse to issue such an invitation? Is it because they cannot agree among themselves where the event should be held, or how long in the future it should be scheduled? Every month we delay, more of the north burns.

LFLF Column
-----------

As no army from the north has appeared to force the southern little folk to preserve the north, we shall continue with our plan to pursue commerce and agriculture over politics and war. It helps that we are in the peaceful, bucolic south, not the burning northlands.

Underworld Column
-----------------

The little folk continue to search for an entrance to the underworld over the northern edge of the world. We know how to weave ropes, using herbs and spinning wheels. We have more than 1500 picks, mostly at northernmost edge of the world. There are few no stout little folk (we are _little_), so we have brought centaurs from the south to help us lift and lower miners over the edge using these ropes. The miners cut steps and platforms into the edge as we try to work our way down. There are some areas hidden from view that some of our geologists think might hide caves that would let us into the fabled underworld, and away from the war ravaged north. Our Eldest promised us peace (and he tells us that Good Mr. Hagen helps secure that peace), but the northern half of the world has been less than completely peaceful recently. Maybe it will be safer underground.

Rope failures have assisted in the transcendence of quite a few little folk miners and camp followers (hey, soldiers aren't the only professionals who need food, entertainment, and "other things" in the intervals between their work). The miners want the weaponsmiths to forge chains for them, to more reliably support heavy work platforms on the northern face of the edge of the world. But our weaponsmiths tell our miners they should ask our linguists for the origin of the work "weaponsmith", and what other words it might be related to. The weaponsmiths explain that if they were allowed to make chains, they would have the shorter and older name "smiths". Our weaponsmiths say the little folk weaponsmithing guild rules do allow them to make tools, (hammers, picks, and spears), but only if those tools that can also be used as weapons. Little folk weaponsmiths tell little folk miners that if miners want a tool that cannot be used as weapon, guild rules require that this tool be produced by a carpenter, not a weapon maker. The little folk orcs listened silently, then politely went looking for carpenters. The little folk dwarves muttered and raged and threatened to find some chains somewhere. (Some little folk dwarves think steel defenders might have chains inside). The dwarves say that once they find the chains they will challenge the weaponsmiths to a grand melee in which the miners are armed with chains and the weaponsmiths are unarmed.

Really, the biggest problem in the north is not breaking ropes, but dragons. We are touched that Martenik's Trade guild is concerned for the safety of northern littlefolk. Marteniks saw one dragon feeding on little folk. There are three dragons nearby. And a sphinx.

*... so the most important thing is how you make the joints, see?"
     "What do you mean?"
"Any damn fool can make a bookcase - but if you want it to last, you gotta make the joints right. You gotta make something you can give to your kid one day, right?"
"I'll be lucky to live to tomorrow the way things are going these days - kid can fend for hisself..."
