The last of the pegasi thundered down onto the grass and swiftly pulled up, then turned and cantered over to the water troughs where the rest of the herbalists were already letting their mounts slake their thirst. The lanky officer swung down to the ground, giving his mare a gentle pat on her neck as she pushed among the other mounts crowding the upturned half-barrel.

"Fourteenth squad?" The call came from a high elf - tall, black of hair, clear of brow, noble of mien, a shining exemplar of the archetype that made the orc's hackles start to rise and eyes start to narrow from the prejudice of millenia of racial enmity, but the next words from the elf's mouth put him more at ease immediately.

"Telpegil son of Ecthelion at your service, of the Second Gondolindrim. Thank the One and all the Valar that you've come. We've been at the end of our tether for days and I wasn't sure how much longer we could take it here without reinforcements."

The orc leaned back slightly. "We hadn't 'eard the situation was that bad - or bad at all, guv'nah. Wot's the trouble? More assassins?"

The elf's alabaster skin seemed to pale even further.

"No, my lord orc. It's not an enemy, it's our *allies*." He pointed up past the orc's shoulder, and squinting against the daylight, the lanky captain could just make out a black dot moving toward the aerodrome. It swiftly grew in size and with a whistling howl resolved into a frame of hide and wood that ploughed into the turf and skidded to a halt, from which leapt a short form with a halo of coppery hair and an oddly-knotted beard, who proclaimed with a flourish, "Iiiiiiiiiit's ME! HUURAH!"

The orc and the elf exchanged long looks.

"Lady Kate Flashbeard, of the legendary Flashbeard's Flying Circus! The best pilot, the best drinker, and the best lover in the Unnumbered Shores! Flash by name, flash by nature - WOOF!"

The last was accompanied by a pumped fist and a pelvic thrust, made slightly comical bye diminutive stature of the gnome performing it.

The lanky officer rubbed his throbbing temples. This had 'long day' written all over it.
