The Cartographer (30)
The vikings have read with curiosity the ponderings of the little folk on our language. We will share that it actually is not complicated. The viking language is just a devolved dialect of the common tongue, and has been developed by usage necessities. Our historical usage has developed many words for casual sailing on water, as we sometimes coast the seven seas or glide, drift, float in them or skim over them or waft and travel in them. But there are no words for moving in foreign territories, it is always advance. We are simple people, while we may move around our own lands from one settlement to another, but if we need to reach destination outside our lands on land, it is always advancing with weapons drawn. It may be tradition or just natural reaction to the situation that neighbours usually take up their own arms after our arrival and resulting looting and pillaging.

At the end the vikings commend nice articles of little folk as they are read with great interest as they usually lie on the edge of viking intellectual capacity and curiosity. Considerations whether 'conquer' means liberation or enslavement is close to the heart, while words as complex as "subjugate" are too much. The little folk articles may be the second most awaited articles from Times in our faction, right after the jokes by.

Our Eldest's Column
-------------------

The little folk liberation front thought I was in hiding, neglecting my studies and my other responsibilities. I thought they were two thirds right. They were three thirds right.

No viking advance from the southeast has been sighted yet.

Rabies Column
-------------

Filras says fun is about to start, "bring it on"; others claim Filras assassinated a hedgehog in Lamahel. Hedgehogs write of rabies and putting enimals to sleep. There are little folk a month from Lamahel. Should I ask them to go investigate, or warn them to keep well away to protect them from rabies? How do the Filras know the fun is about to start? Is Miss Goblin Grammar right? Is the best way to predict the future to invent it?

Old Guard Column
----------------

Not much left. This columnist will be looking for another job soon.

Sphinx Column
-------------

Little folk are very impressed with Martinik's ability to defend his trade wagons. But we assure Martinik, "sphinx" is preceded by an indefinite article, not by the definite article. Two sphinxes living among the little folk have left, disappointed with our music, perhaps. 5 have remained to see how the concert continues this month. And two new sphinxes have arrived, perhaps in response to our flyers advertising music for monsters. So this month again, more than a hundred little folk live together with 7 sphinxes.

Assistant Editor's Column
-------------------------

Usually I direct my columnists to direct their attention to the articles and rumors in last month's Times, if they are too lazy to do investigative reporting of their own, or to carefully read through little folk government reports of happenings in all lands the little folk occupy. This month, the Times and rumors were a bit thin; all I got was a request for travel funds to investigate the Children of the Four Winds' Gianduja tower. Sounds like a boondoggle to me. Should I deny the request, or insist that I should accompany the columnist?

Tea Column
----------

Our tea will come too late.

Religion Column
---------------

D# major or Eb major are perfectly good tunes for religious music. We have, however, discouraged our devout orcs from singing "Fie on goodness, fie", because although the song at face value seems to describe a religious utopia, it is far from clear to the priests and priestesses that 'Fie on goodness' encourages knights (or our unmounted orcs) to establish that utopia.

LFLF Column
-----------

uThe LFLF have put off doing anything about Stockwood until it is much to late to assist it. We think Miss Goblin Grammar would prefer we use the word "liberate", but why should we obey her? Now all that remains is to pin the blame for its fall on our Eldest because he is not here. Or perhaps he will show up, in which case it will be easy to pin the blame on him for being here; we don't think he can prevent its fall without our help, and why would we help him?

Music Column
------------

Little folk musicians from far separated portions of the little folk diaspora have heard a new "Fie on goodness, fie" ditty from their neighbors. Most who have tried to transcribe it from ear have written it in Eb major. It makes sense that they would do that, as this pleasant little ditty is sung by knights, and Eb major is a commonly chosen key for heroic music. However, a bit of foreign sheet music has come into little folk hands (honestly, we assume), and this has the tune in D# major. D# major is a notoriously hard key to read or write. Can this be believed, or was the author of this sheet music deliberately trying to play tricks on the little folk musicians?

Peace Column
------------

Voting? Will voting bring peace, or will voting cause more intense war? The little folk believe the best swords stay in their scabbards. But the little folk won't matter now, we have few swords, none of the best swords, and many little ears. Most of the places the little folk inhabit (west and south of the shadow of the nexus), little folk ears hear knights singing "Fie on goodness, fie."

Obituary Column
---------------

Retiring Uid was slain by sandlings and evil warriors. Bizarrely, the weather was good, and no evil magicians or evil sorcerors participated. That is unusual. The evil warriors grow bold to attack unprotected by their weather mages.

The monster hunting force had failed utterly to find the sandlings. Clearly the little fiends had moved out of the way, and why was it the one time the Children of the Four Winds had a force big enough to tackle a sphinx, the enigmatic monster decides to take to the skies?

In the night, the stoves hummed, not subsiding,
My ashes were stirred up by the poker.
But, ascending with smoke from Volwaz chimneys,
Alive I descended into the meadows.

"Look at us! The Fendahl is with us! We need not this adamant, nor these bows of yew, for our faith is strong and our hearts are pure! You, there, woodsorc - raise up the axe in your hand and the song in your heart and that sphinx shall be ours!" called the flagellant, frothing slightly about the mouth as the spirit of the Fendahl filled it.

The tree-felling party exchanged glances. Then looked at the frankly impressive size of the sphinx, and the significantly less-impressive axes they held.

"Yeah, good luck with that," replied the leader. "Gentleorcs, if you would, three, four - I'm... a lumberorc and I'm okay, I work all night and I sing all day..."

The next morning, the Patriarch announced the Second Coming of Holden's Spirit and the Holy Blessing of the new patriarch to bring the light of true faith to the world of Atlantis. The items involved in the ritual were declared Sacred. At the place of the patriarch's overnight stay, the construction of the Church of the Holly Coming was announced.
