The crowd fell silent as the nobleman gestured towards the lizardman. It leapt smoothly onto the table, oiled crest gleaming in the torchlight, and addressed the throng.
“Well, magus, I appreciate the opportunity you’ve given me to speak here, as one of the founders of this endeavour.
Ladies and gentlemen, we’re not here to indulge in fantasy like some role-playing game of Papers and Paychecks, but in fiscal and economic reality. Look at our population centers – we are a second-rate power. Our trade deficit and fiscal deficit are of nightmare proportions. Now in the days of yore, there was accountability to the stockholder. The miners and lumberjacks, the smiths and woodworkers, the people who build this mercantile empire made sure of it because their money was at stake! Today, wizardry has no stake in the network!
All together, these mages sitting up here own less than 3 percent of the network. And where does the High Magus put the proceeds from his phantasmal entertainment? Not in our peasantry.
You own this enterprise. Yes, you, the stockholder.
And you are being royally screwed over by these… these… magicians, with their vodka lunches, their hunting and fishing trips, their cloudships and amulets of True Seeing.
This coalition has 15 different apprentices, each costing over 1300 silver a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what these prestidigitators do, and I still can’t figure it out. One thing I do know is that our merchant-venturers lost over 20,000 silver last year, and I’ll bet half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between those apprentices.
The new law of evolution in this paradigm seems to be the survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book, you either do it right or you get eliminated.
In the last seven deals that I’ve been involved with, there were 25 stakeholders who made a pre-tax profit of over 120,000 silver. Thank you.
I am not a destroyer of cities. I am a liberator of them!
The point, ladies and gentlemen, is that greed, for want of a better word, is good.
Greed is right.
Greed works.
Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the Atlantean spirit.
Greed – in all its forms, for life, for money, for love, for magic - has marked the upward surge of all our kinds.
And greed – mark you my words – will not only save our enterprise, but that other malfunctioning corporation called Atlantis.”
