If Alzakein had to choose one word to describe the underworld, he was pretty sure it would be /dank/.

Down here, everything had a slight air of musty rot to it. Even as powerful a Maga as Julia Venatrix was showing a few hints of mildew, as it turned out that the cloaks were only /nigh/-invulnerable. The fires for breakfast were kept small, but their smoke hung low and sluggish in the moisture-heavy air. If you could call it breakfast, in the perpetual gloom only lightly disturbed by the odd glowing lichen, or the glare from the garnets in his staff.

Even Master Miner Parsell had emerged from his tent, hair like some wild badger had made a nest in it, complaining of ague and distemper and other ailments that left even Master Nygjord scratching her beard and talking quizzically to her fungi. The archers were already breaking down their tents into gliders so Alzakein threw the last dregs of what only a very charitable drow indeed would call coffee onto the embers and moved to settle his things. Amulet and aegis, crystal and chime, the manipulator’s catechism, left breast-right breast-forehead-and-heart. His bed rolled up as his rug unrolled in a pleasing symmetry, when it started.

It rolled like distant thunder, waves of percussion, seemingly from every direction, the sound of heavy staves crashing on hide stretched taut across frames two arms-across. Complex patterns, rhythms intertwining and punctuated by staccato pauses.

More disturbing than the drums was the reaction of the bearers. The underdwarves were obviously unnerved by the sound, clustering swiftly into clumped huddles shuddering with fear and anticipation, their weapons cast aside and their pegasi left still tethered.

Alzakein seized his staff and strode to the nearest group, seizing the arm of Krodmor, the foreman.

“What is wrong with you? It’s just goblins! Even if they have an ettin they’ll never get past the cavalry and Julia’s pets will swiftly show that they are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!”

“No, lord, it is not d-d-death we fear,” replied the foreman in a quivering stammer. “It is that… that… it is known to all, the greatest of tortures awaits us! For is it not as the prophecy is written, in the lore passed down from the forgebooks of Thelor?"

The dwarf drew a breath, lips blue and face pale, as he recited the words of ancient scripture.

"When the drum solo ends, the bass solo is sure to follow!”

We have two important notes:
1. Please, do not state, that you bought or anyhow else "legally" occupied regions, which were not conquered by you.
2. If you are young faction, and looking for a place under the sky of this World, please, contact me. Probably I have a nice offer.

The world seems a kinder place these days. Our scouts haven't been denied entry anywhere for some time. A time of peace and enlightenment, or the beginning of the dark ages?

The Ambassador mused. It felt strange that little you could do militarily could cause than the merest inconvenience to the large alliances. However, perhaps in denying quests to them you could find purpose in slowing down their ascent to victory. Perhaps there is meaning left...

Akhorahil looked out over the seas from high up in his magical tower. Rumors of war were in the air, but the seas were relatively calm in every direction. Many ships were arriving and departing the island, some bringing fresh supplies, while others were bringing veteran troops from the colonies, troops that were much larger, much stronger than the local goblins.
